Oceanside Pier seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
Oceanside Pier is fundamentally a winter and early-spring wave. As the North Pacific jet stream dips south and low-pressure systems parade across the Gulf of Alaska, the pier sits in the direct firing line of long-period W and WSW groundswell. Average swell heights hold at around 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m) with periods in the powerful 12.4-12.6s range, and the west/west-southwest mix lines up beautifully with the southwest-facing beach. Even better, the cold months deliver the highest frequency of NE/ENE offshore wind - including classic Santa Ana setups - with ideal surfing wind 42-52% of the time from November through February. This is the window where the pier can produce clean, semi-glass, peaky waves with real push.
Fair Surf Season (April, September, October)
April is the last strong winter-style month, with solid WSW/W and SW swell and a 13.3s period, but the afternoon onshore wind begins to bite. September and October mark the transition back: ocean temperatures are still warm, tropical storms and early North Pacific lows can throw in extra swell, and October sees the first reliable return of offshore wind. Surf is generally in the 3ft (0.9m) range, without the full consistency or power of winter, but there are genuine morning windows worth chasing.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer brings persistent long-period SW/SSW groundswell and a lineup that rarely goes flat, but quality is limited by the marine layer and a strong diurnal W/SW sea breeze. Ideal wind plummets to just 4-7%, while the average swell height drops to around 3ft (1m) and only rarely exceeds 5ft (1.5m). Dawn patrol is often the only window for clean conditions, and even then the SW/WSW cross-onshore flow can make the waves feel bumpy once the breeze fills in.
