Best Surf Season (October - March)

Sandy Hook sits with its sandbars facing east-northeast, so the best waves arrive when North Atlantic storms and Nor'easters generate swell from the NNE through E quadrant. From October through March, the average swell height runs 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods in the 7-second range and climbing, fueled by an active low-pressure track along the US East Coast. The westerly and northwesterly winds that dominate in the wake of passing cold fronts blow offshore, grooming the lines into clean, hollow walls. When the NAO index trends negative, the Mid-Atlantic storm track aligns even better for Sandy Hook, delivering repeated pulses of E/NE groundswell. This is the meat of the year for the Hook.
