Winter is when Sunglow Pier earns its reputation as a dependable Florida sandbar. The North Atlantic storm track shifts southward, and the parade of cold fronts and coastal nor'easters firing up off the Carolina coast sends consistent NNE, NE, and ENE groundswell straight into the pier's east-northeast exposure. Behind each departing front, high pressure builds and swings the wind into the west and southwest - perfectly offshore for this stretch of coast. That's why December, January, and February post the highest ideal-wind percentages of the year at 20-21%. Expect the daily menu to be fun-sized 2-3ft (0.6-1m) waves on 8-8.5s intervals, with the occasional 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) spank when a nor'easter stalls just off Hatteras. November stands out as the true gem: the biggest average swell of the year at 2.6ft (0.8m), the highest share of solid favorable-direction waves, and dry, cool air that keeps the tropics at bay.
