Tucked away just around the corner from Wilderness, Wishing Well is a fickle yet rewarding right-hander that delivers some of the shallowest, most exhilarating barrels on the Garden Route. The wave breaks over a bed of sharp coral, demanding respect and a commitment to the pit—blow a section here and you’ll feel it. Its sheltered position means the wave is almost always clean and offshore when many other spots are onshore, making it a reliable go-to for solid conditions. Access is as straightforward as it gets: park right next to the break. Just note that the road turns into a slick, muddy mess after rain, so plan accordingly. Wishing Well really only fires on a proper groundswell from the NW, NNW, or N, with the magic window sitting between 5 and 10 feet (1.5–3 m). Lower tides are generally preferred, especially when the swell is pumping. A strong current rips through on bigger days, but it actually works in your favor—minimal paddling needed if you time the drift right. However, competition for waves is stiff. There are a few distinct takeoff zones, but they get cramped quickly when the line-up is lit. Expect most surfers to be on shortboards or bodyboards, threading the tube with intent. The crowd factor is intense when conditions align, and the local vibes can feel territorial. If you’re hoping for a session here, target the late summer to fall for tropical swells or late fall through early spring for more consistent westerly energy. Come prepared, stay low-key, and earn your place—Wishing Well doesn’t hand out its treasures for free.

Best Surf Season (November - March)

The period from November through March is Wishing Well's most reliable window for size and power. Average surf heights sit at 5-5.5ft (1.5-1.6m) with 10-second periods, and the winter North Atlantic storm track pushes persistent NNE through ENE swell into the islands. Cold-front pulses, low-pressure systems sweeping off the U.S. East Coast, and the Azores/Bermuda High combine to produce the most energetic, long-period groundswell of the year. Ideal surf wind is lower in these months, 39-49 percent, because the trade winds strengthen, but the direction remains offshore from the E/ENE quadrant. When the right cold front passes and the wind eases, Wishing Well can see punchy 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) wrapping waves. December through February are the standouts, with March close behind.
