August: Peak Period and Winter's Consistent Pulse

August is arguably the most consistent month of the winter at South Point. The average swell height remains imposing at 2.7m (8.9ft), while the average period peaks at 13.3s - the longest of the year. The directional distribution is again centred on SW (25.6%) and WSW (14.0%), with W adding 4.1% and WNW/NW chipping in 1.4% and 0.5%. The 20% share from the ideal westerly window, combined with the highest average period of the year, means that when the winds play ball the surf is powerful, lined-up and deeply satisfying.

Wind remains the main obstacle. The WSW-through-NW onshore sector is the largest wind grouping at 38.6%, and ideal surfing conditions sit at 16%. However, note that the wind distribution is not all one-way: SSE 4.1%, S 5.6%, SSW 8.0%, SW 9.9%, and a decent 15.3% from the offshore ENE-E-ESE-SE quadrant. This gives you occasional windows of light SE/ESE flow that turn the big winter swell offshore and make South Point truly world-class. With the water at its coldest of the year, 17.3°C, and air temperatures around 14.3°C, August is a hard-core month for the dedicated. The rewards are epic when the synoptic setup comes together.
