February: Late-Summer Southwest Swell With Early Morning Windows

February is very much a sibling of January, with an average swell height of 1.8m (5.9ft) and a period of 11.9s. The southwest quadrant remains the driving force - SW at 33.9% and SSW at 33.1% - while the more direct W and WNW directions barely register (W 1.1%, WNW 0.4%). The waves are still rideable and often in the 3-6ft range, especially when 1-2m class southwest swell fills in, but South Point is still not seeing the true westerly groundswells that make it exceptional.

Wind statistics show a slight improvement in offshore availability: the ENE-E-ESE-SE quadrant is present 34.0% of the time, although ideal conditions are logged at 16%. The prevailing flow is still from the south-southeast (SSE 21.0%, S 18.3%), but the lighter wind speeds in the 10-30kph range offer more manageable surface conditions than January. With the water temperature climbing to 21.0°C and air temps at 20.7°C, February is a pleasant, warm month to be in the water. It lacks the power of winter, but you can still find clean waist-to-head-high waves if you pick the right window, generally early morning before the southerly seabreeze kicks in.
