October: Spring Energy Starts to Soften

October marks a step back in size but not in quality potential. The average swell height drops to 2.2m (7.2ft), while the period holds at 12.9s, meaning the swell is still powerful and long-period even as the Southern Ocean storm track starts to weaken. The direction is once again dominated by SW at 40.1% and WSW at 15.4%, with SSW at 10.8% and W at 2.6%. The ideal WSW-WNW window accounts for roughly 18.6% of the total, so there are still plenty of westerly swells hitting the beach directly. Waves will often be in the fun-to-pumping range of 3-8ft, depending on the pulse.

Winds become more variable in the spring transition. The onshore WSW-WNW sector is still notable at 27.5%, but the SSE/S/SSW/SW group is now the broadest part of the wind rose, and the offshore ENE-E-ESE-SE quadrant is back up to 21.4%. Ideal surfing conditions sit at 17%. The lighter, showery spring pattern - air temp 15.3°C, water 17.8°C, rainfall 1.24 mm/day - means you can often find clean mornings between fronts. October is not the power month that July is, but it offers more playful, accessible waves and a real chance of scoring South Point without the winter storm chaos.
