Ekas

Outside Ekas, perched on the eastern headland of Sumbawa's wild coastline, is a raw and powerful left-hand reef break that demands respect. Set against sheer, verdant cliffs, it draws more swell than its neighbor, Inside Ekas, making it a consistent performer on the Bali-Sumbawa charter circuit. The trade-off is a crowd factor—expect company, especially from local fishing and charter boats shuttling between Awang and Kuta. The wave here is a fast, sometimes chaotic left, peeling over a live coral bottom. It fires best on a southwest swell, starting from a modest 3 feet but quickly ramping up in intensity and size. The rides are long and exhilarating, but the power is unrelenting—strong currents and deep hold-downs are part of the game. Advanced surfers will find their groove, while confident intermediates can join the fray, provided they’re ready for a fight. Tides offer flexibility: the wave works at low, mid, and high, but east winds are your ticket to clean conditions. Don't let the postcard scenery fool you. Outside Ekas is a high-adrenaline session. The marine life adds its own unpredictable twist, and the overall challenge is real. If you’re not an experienced surfer, tread carefully—this wave does not offer second chances.

Best Surf Season (April - October)

The wave data for Ekas shows a recurring theme: the raw open-ocean energy almost always arrives from the SSW/SW quadrant, while the N/NW directions - often considered the theoretical best for the bay - remain absent in the statistics. This means the surf at Ekas is largely dependent on refracted Indian Ocean groundswell wrapping around the headland, and the quality is decided by the wind. When the dry southeast monsoon locks in across the Indonesian archipelago, Ekas shifts into gear. The dominant S/SW groundswell trains from the Southern Indian Ocean arrive with 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) of clean, well-organized energy and periods of 13-14 seconds. At the same time, the persistent ESE-to-SE trade winds groom the bay, and the data shows the highest percentage of ideal surfing conditions of the year. April, May, September and October are especially good: swell strength is solid but not out of control, winds are lighter, and rain is scarce. June through August brings the biggest averages of 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and can still be very good, though the trades are stronger and can add texture to the surface.
