Today's Surf Conditions at Scar Reef
Spot Overview & Description
Scar Reef is the crown jewel of West Sumbawa’s surf scene—a raw, unapologetic challenge that demands respect before it offers reward. This left-hand reef break is built for experts only, where sharp coral and freight-train barrels separate the bold from the foolhardy. When the Indian Ocean sends its energy, the vibe stays mellow ashore, but beneath the surface, this wave is anything but. The magic happens with a southwest swell, though a pure south setup can also fire it up. Minimum size is around 3 feet, but Scar Reef truly comes alive as the swell pushes overhead and beyond, easily handling double-overhead-plus waves. The takeoff is a quick, critical drop into a hollow left that morphs from a perfectly groomed mid-tide bowl into a fast, pitching wall as the tide rises. Ideal conditions call for southeasterly winds, which groom the faces into clean, playing-card walls. Scar Reef works across a wide tidal range—low, mid, and high tide all have their moments, but each phase demands a different line. This reef shows no mercy: expect a steep, lip-throwing entry, a brief backdoor alley, and a relentless closeout section that punishes hesitation. This is not a place to learn—it’s a proving ground for the elite.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (May - October)
The south-east monsoon is the great redeemer at Scar Reef. From May through October the percentage of ideal offshore wind sits at 87-89 percent, rainfall collapses to near zero, and the average swell height builds to 5-6ft (1.5-1.7m) with 14.2-14.4 second periods. This is powerful, long-period energy, but the direction remains stubbornly SSW-SW - a poor match for this north-west-facing reef. The offshore SSE-SE flow is what saves the spot: it grooms the cross-swell, keeps the faces smooth, and lets the long-period groundswell wrap into the reef. This is the closest Scar Reef gets to firing all year.
