Best Surf Season (May - September)
The heart of the Indonesian dry season lines up perfectly for Lances Left. As strong extratropical lows roll through the Southern Indian Ocean, the southwest-facing reef gets a continuous stream of long-period SSW and SW groundswell. Average wave heights hold around 1.0m (3ft), periods peak at 13.4-13.9s, and the percentage of 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf climbs steadily. At the same time, the southeast trade winds become the dominant atmospheric feature, blowing cross-offshore and grooming the face. This is the sweet spot: clean, punchy, rippable Lances.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
April and October are transition months between the northwest and southeast monsoon regimes. The swell periods are still respectable - around 12.6-12.7s - and the SSW/SW directions dominate, but heights stay modest and the wind regimes are more variable. You can find excellent sessions between the rain squalls, especially when the early SE trades or late land breezes align with a 13s+ pulse, but consistency is not yet locked in.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
From November through March the northwest monsoon wields control over the region. Average wave periods drop to 10-11.5s, mean heights settle at 2-3ft (0.8m), and the wind roses fill up with NW, WNW, and NNW flow, along with increasing W/WSW onshore energy. This is the classic wet-season lull: smaller, shorter-period surf, bumpy texture, and fewer true groundswell windows. The odd strong SSW/SW event can still fire, but you have to thread the needle between monsoon squalls.
