Tucked at the base of Sipura Island, Lance's Left delivers a powerful left-hand alternative to its more famous right-handed neighbor. This wave earns its reputation with a muscular, reef-break punch that can serve up everything from lumpy, small-wave walls to fast, hollow barrels when the swell kicks. It’s no secret—expect a fair share of company in the lineup, so bring your patience along with your paddling arms. The magic happens with a clean east wind and a south swell nudging in from the deep. While a southwest swell is the optimal angle, good south and west swells can also turn it on. Lance's Left handles waves up to about three feet (0.9 meters) with grace, breaking over live coral—so keep your fins sharp and your awareness sharper. The wave holds well across all tides—low, mid, and high—but beware: overhead pulses can shift behavior, making the takeoff zone a moving target. This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers, especially as the end section demands respect. It’s beautifully hollow but can quickly become unmakeable if you misjudge the exit. On bigger days, getting caught inside turns into an intense workout, so knowing the reef layout is essential. For a safer paddle, wait wider for the sneaker sets, and if you find yourself in a tight spot, remember the keyhole—it’s your ticket back out of the chaos.

Best Surf Season (May - September)

The heart of the Indonesian dry season lines up perfectly for Lances Left. As strong extratropical lows roll through the Southern Indian Ocean, the southwest-facing reef gets a continuous stream of long-period SSW and SW groundswell. Average wave heights hold around 1.0m (3ft), periods peak at 13.4-13.9s, and the percentage of 3-5ft (1-1.5m) surf climbs steadily. At the same time, the southeast trade winds become the dominant atmospheric feature, blowing cross-offshore and grooming the face. This is the sweet spot: clean, punchy, rippable Lances.
