Today's Surf Conditions at Telescopes
Spot Overview & Description
Telescopes is a classic reef break that delivers consistent, user-friendly waves in a stunning coastal setting. The left-hander peels for up to 200 meters over live coral, offering predictable walls that are ideal for intermediates refining their turns, while experts can still find plenty of fun in the pocket and occasional tube sections. The wave comes alive with a SouthWest swell, handling 4-foot (1.2-meter) groundswells best, and cleans up nicely with SouthEast winds. Mid to high tide tends to bring out the hollowest shapes, allowing for some memorable barrel rides. Despite its forgiving nature, don’t underestimate the currents when larger sets push through, and be prepared to share the lineup—this spot draws a crowd for good reason. Whether you’re looking to dial in your backhand snaps or simply enjoy a long, rippable ride, Telescopes consistently delivers a rewarding session in one of the most beautiful settings around.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (May - October)
Telescopes comes alive during the southeast monsoon. From May through October, the wind roses swing around to the offshore quadrant-ENE, E, ESE and SE-and the percentage of ideal, surfable wind climbs to 50-60%. At the same time, the South Indian Ocean storm track is firing, sending persistent long-period groundswell toward Indonesia. Average wave periods in the 13.7-14.5 second range are powerful, and average wave heights rise to 4-5ft (1.2-1.4m) with regular 5-6ft (1.5-2m) sets. The dominant swell direction is often SSW/SW rather than the preferred WSW-WNW window, but those long periods help the south energy wrap around the reef. Combined with the driest stretch of the year and bathwater temps around 29-30°C, this is the firing window for Telescopes.
