Chickens is a storied left-hander that delivers a distinct blend of character and challenge, set against a stunning, laid-back backdrop. This reef break, breaking over dead coral, has earned its popularity for a reason: under the right conditions, it serves up long, playful rides that occasionally spit for ten seconds or more. But don't let the promise of perfection fool you—Chickens is a fickle beauty, with wave quality and crowd sizes shifting dramatically through the year. When the wind swings southwest, things get messy fast, so timing is everything. The sweet spot arrives with a Southeast swell, though a solid South swell can also coax it to life. It handles waves in the 2-foot range (roughly 0.6 meters) and works across all tides—low, mid, and high—though each phase can alter the takeoff and exit. Intermediate surfers will find their groove here, especially with a clean Northwest breeze ironing out the face. On a major Southeast pulse, keep an eye on Meerufenfushi Corner for potential rights, but don't expect those to match the zippy, playful nature of Chickens' lefts. It's a spot worth the paddle, and when it lines up, it delivers.

Best Surf Season (March - April)

As the northeast monsoon starts to break down in March, the swell direction swings from east-northeast into the SE and SSE. Offshore flow from the N/NW quarter becomes more frequent, and the percentage of clean, surfable wind jumps to 61% in March and 55% in April. That combination is the closest Chickens gets to a 'textbook' window: the wave heights are modest but the lines are clean and the right-south component in the swell is consistently present. Periods sit in the 7-8 second range, so it won't be massive, but for a fun, rippable reef break it can be superb.
