Neixpa

Rio Nexpa earns its reputation as one of Mexico’s heavy-hitting surf destinations, tucked at the southern edge of Michoacán State. This rivermouth setup cranks out a long, grinding left that peels over a mix of cobblestone, jagged rocks, and shifting sandbars. The vibe is laid-back and friendly, but when the stars align—especially during the prime season from April through September—the lineup fills fast with a mix of locals and travelers alike. The left-hander at Nexpa truly comes alive under a solid south to southwest swell, with the best shape on low to mid tides. Wave heights flex from chest-high (roughly 1.2 meters) to double-overhead (around 6 meters), and the wave has the backbone to handle serious size. Clean conditions call for north to northeast winds, grooming the face into a smooth, rippable canvas. Expect a workout between rides: paddling back out after a long, zipping left requires serious effort. Keep your head on a swivel for strong currents and a tricky rocky exit that can catch you off guard. There’s also a shorter right-hander off the main peak that swings back into the rivermouth when swells shift more westerly, offering a less crowded alternative. The local crew here charges hard, and while the atmosphere is welcoming, always remember you’re a guest. Respect the pecking order, and you’ll find stoke rather than tension. If the main break feels too intense, head north to the beach breaks at Playa Linda Vista and La Manzanilla for a mellow change of pace. Gear-wise, Rio Nexpa suits a wide quiver: shortboards and longboards both work well, and when the swell cranks, a fish or a gun can help you tame the beast according to your style and the day’s size.

Best Surf Season (October - February)

This is the premium window at Neixpa. A SSW-facing beach break, Neixpa receives almost continuous long-period groundswell from the South Pacific, but the real key is wind. From October through February, high pressure over mainland Mexico delivers more frequent N/NNE/NE/NNW offshore flow, and ideal wind conditions run between 28 and 37 percent. Long-period swell from the S/SSW/SW quadrant averages 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods of 13-14s, creating clean, rippable peaks on a warm winter ocean. Rainfall is low and the water stays in the 27-29C range.
