San Pancho

San Pancho—also known as San Francisco—is a mellow, sun-drenched escape tucked just a stone’s throw from the bustling Costa Azul resort. Here, the rhythm slows down and the crowds thin out, offering a distinctly unhurried alternative to the manic energy of California lineups. The local crew is friendly, and while the beach rarely feels empty—especially on weekends—the vibe remains relaxed, inviting, and refreshingly low-key. The real draw lies in the wave itself: a fast, racetrack left peeling off the point and a playful right-hand peak that funnels in front of the river mouth, serving up a dynamic mix of point and beachbreak action over a reef-and-sand bottom. San Pancho comes alive with a solid southwest swell, though it can handle energy from the south and northwest as well. The magic happens when swell size hovers around 2 feet (0.6 meters), with low to mid tides unlocking the best shape. On the right tide, especially at low water, the waves pitch up into hollow, punchy corners that will test any intermediate surfer’s timing and reflexes. For clean conditions, look for east winds—they groom the surface and keep the lines crisp. A word to the wise: keep an eye on the rips near the river mouth, as they can get pushy and unpredictable when the tide swings. These currents are the only real teeth in an otherwise friendly setup. Come for the peeling lefts, stay for the easygoing atmosphere, and leave with the feeling that you’ve found something special.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The North Pacific storm track roars to life in late autumn and winter, and San Pancho feels it directly. From December through March, the average swell height runs around 1.0-1.1m (3-3.5ft) with long-period groundswell intervals of 13.5-13.6s. The wave rose is dominated by W and WNW swell - precisely the directions this west-northwest-facing beach needs - so even moderate winter swells translate into fun, rippable waves. The catch is wind: the region is often trapped under a persistent NNW/NW onshore flow, and ideal offshore conditions clock in at only 2-11% of the time. Still, when a Pacific cold front sweeps through and the pressure gradient flips to a light SW/SSW offshore, the combination of powerful W-WNW groundswell and clean surfaces makes December through February, and often March, the best windows of the year.
