La Barqueta stretches 22 kilometers west of David, a broad, south-facing beach break that’s as chill as they come. When the surf is small and the crowds are thin—which is most of the time—this flat, open strand offers a mellow escape for beginners and travelers looking to stretch their legs. Access is effortless: follow the paved roads toward the Las Olas Beach Resort signs and you’re there. The wave is a fickle sand-bottom beach break, preferring southeast to west swells. It typically handles waves around 1 foot (0.3 meters) and can offer both left and right peaks, though the quality depends heavily on sandbar formation. At its best—usually on a mid to high tide—the wave can turn dumpy and powerful, but it rarely reaches anything spectacular. When the sand is right, there’s enough shape to keep things interesting for a few hours. This spot shines for surfers who are learning the ropes or just want a no-stress session. That said, conditions can shift fast, and rips are known to swirl around the lineup, so keep your head on a swivel. The wind plays a key role: north winds are your friend, smoothing out the surface, while afternoon breezes tend to chop things up. Plan for an early morning session to catch the cleanest windows. Overall, La Barqueta won’t blow you away, but when the conditions line up and you’ve got the tide and sandbars working in your favor, it’s a worthwhile stop for a relaxed paddle on the Pacific side of Panama.

Best Surf Season (December - April)

La Barqueta lights up when the dry season settles over Panama's Pacific coast. From December through April, the northeast trade winds become the dominant weather maker, blowing from the north and offshore quarter and grooming the SSW-facing beach for long periods of time. During this window, ideal wind for surfing runs between 51 and 73 percent, reaching its peak in January and February. The swell is equally cooperative: almost all wave energy arrives from the SSW and SW, with average periods in the 12-14 second range. Heights are modest but rippable, with the majority of waves in the 0.5-1m (2-3ft) to 1-1.5m (3-5ft) range. This combination of offshore wind and consistent long-period swell produces the cleanest, most consistent surf of the year.
