The surf here thrives on south, southeast, and southwest swells, offering both left and right peaks over a clean, sandy bottom. Optimum conditions call for offshore north winds to groom the open faces, and the size range kicks in from as little as 1 foot up to a solid, rideable wall. On its best days, the beach break can unroll into quick, top-to-bottom tubes that barrel with surprising punch, but don’t expect that magic every session. Best Surf Season (December - April)

Playa Madrono's surf year is written by the seasonal tug-of-war between dry offshore trade winds and the rainy, onshore southwest monsoon. From December through April, a strong pressure gradient across the region keeps the N, NNE, NW and NNW wind quadrants active, with ideal surfing wind clocking in at 51-76 percent. Swell heights average a dependable 3-4ft (1.0-1.1m) through this window, but the period evolution is crucial: trade windswell in December at around 10s gradually gives way to longer-period southern-hemisphere groundswell by March and April, when the period reaches 12.4-13.7s and the SSW/SW swell share expands to over half, then to nearly three-quarters, of the total energy. Minimal rain and warm water make this the most rewarding and consistent time of year for clean, rippable surf.
