Getting to Playa Raya is a true mission, requiring a long hike across open fields that instantly weeds out the casual crowd. This effort is rewarded with a wild, river-mouth sandbar that morphs with the tides, offering both left and right peaks peeling across an open beach. While it handles a variety of south to southwest swell, the most consistent shape comes from a pure south direction, with the magic zone in the 2- to 4-foot range over a forgiving sand bottom. Low incoming tide is key — the water funnels through the rivermouth, creating a strong rip that will test your drop positioning. The ideal setup pairs North wind with low to mid tide, delivering hollow-ish walls that demand commitment but reward with long, racy rides. This is not a beginners' break; strong intermediate skills are necessary to handle the shifting peaks and sudden currents. Keep your head on a swivel — rays and manta rays frequent the area, and the rivermouth can occasionally attract sharks, adding an extra layer of respect to the session. For surfers willing to work for isolation, Playa Raya serves up a raw, uncrowded experience that feels like a secret well earned.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (April - July)

Playa Raya's surf year is all about timing the southern-hemisphere storm track. Between April and July, average wave periods climb into the 13.5-14.1s range and the wave rose becomes dominated by genuine SSW/S groundswell - 58.9% of the wave energy in April and 92-96% from May through July. At the same time, offshore N/NNE/NNW flow still appears 50-67% of the time, enough to groom those long-period swells into clean, rippable walls. The beach is exposed to the south, so this is the only real window where the open Pacific lines up with the coastline. Expect lots of tropical rain and warm water, but the surf quality is at its annual peak.
