Pulpos is a wide-open beachbreak stretching off the Pan Am Highway, uniquely exposed to capture swell from both the south and northwest. Access is via a signposted route, but parking can be a challenge as it’s primarily reserved for residents, so plan accordingly. The beach’s mix of sands can deliver fun, rippable waves, but it also has a raw, unpredictable edge that keeps you on your toes. When it’s firing, Pulpos serves up steep, fast waves with barrel potential—perfect for surfers who relish smacking the lip as sections close out. It’s most consistent with a 2-foot (0.6-meter) swell, and it handles size from both the south and northwest. Waves break both left and right, though the peaks often line up better for right-handers, offering a nice change of pace. This spot is ideally suited for intermediate surfers. For the best session, aim for a northeast wind and low to mid to high tides. That said, don’t expect perfection. Strong rips can make the lineup challenging, and there are better, more consistent waves up north toward Arica. If you’re looking to switch it up from the usual, the predominantly right-breaking peaks at Pulpos are a solid, if not top-tier, option—just keep an eye on those currents.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (March - May)

Pulpos is a southwest-facing stretch of Peruvian coastline, which means the swell window is beautifully aligned with the South Pacific storm track. The statistics show the most promising surf from March through May: average swell heights climb from around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) to about 6ft (1.8m), while average periods peak at 13.5-13.6s. During this stretch, low-pressure systems spin up in the Southern Ocean and send long-period SSW groundswell straight into the beach. Wind remains the limiting factor, but March stands out with 8 percent ideal offshore wind, the highest of the year, and the lighter, more variable autumn regime offers the best chance of a clean morning before the onshore S/SW breeze builds.
