Turtle Head

Tucked away on the island's backside, Turtle Head lives up to its name with a striking rock formation that offers a modicum of shelter—and an air of mystery. The wave here is a twisting, short right that can momentarily throw a clean tube section, though consistency is not its strong suit. North swells largely leave it flat, but when a southwest groundswell wraps around the southern tip, the energy peels convincingly over a shallow platform reef. It’s a classic hit-or-miss proposition, best suited for surfers willing to roll the dice and wait for the stars to align. The ideal swell direction is southwest, though an occasional northeast pulse can coax it to life. Turtle Head handles waves in the 4-foot range, breaking over dead coral—so watch your step. The main action is a right-hander, and the preferred wind is from the northwest, smoothing out the takeoff zone. It works at all tides: low, mid, and high. This is strictly expert territory—the reef is shallow, the current can be tricky, and the wave demands respect and precision. If you find Turtle Head reluctant on your visit, nearby Pinget Island offers a solid alternative, showing potential on both southwest and northeast swells. That said, when Turtle Head decides to cooperate, its isolated, reef-hugging right and fleeting tube sections make it a singular reward for the patient few.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Philippine surf year is dictated by the shifting monsoons, and at Turtle Head the sweet spot comes with the arrival of the northeast monsoon (Amihan). From October through March, high pressure over the Asian mainland funnels consistent north-northeasterly trade winds and a steady supply of swell across the region. While the raw energy trends from the NNE and NE, the west-southwest exposure of the beach still catches a significant share of refracted and wrap-around groundswell, especially when the period extends beyond the 8-second mark. The wind statistics align beautifully: offshore flow from the north through east is present at or above the 50 percent mark for most of these months, keeping the surface clean and allowing the heads to hold shape. Average wave heights fall in the 3.5-7ft (1.1-2.2m) range, with December typically delivering the heaviest pulses. The dry season also means less tropical rain, making it the most reliable and the most comfortable window to surf.
