Afife is a fast, hollow beach break that peels both left and right over a shifting sand bottom. Often compared to Supertubos for its punchy, high-performance waves, this Portuguese standout delivers consistent, dredging peaks without the crowds—making it a sleeper pick for barrel-hungry surfers. When conditions align, the wedging takeoffs and steep faces spit riders out with authority, rewarding those who can handle a thick, critical drop.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic is the engine room for Afife. This west-facing stretch of the Portuguese coast is wide open to the big winter lows that roll out of the mid-latitude storm track, and the statistics reflect it: average swell heights hold in the 2.1-2.7m (7-9ft) range and periods stay in the powerful 11-13s band. October sees the autumn transition fire up, November and December build into peak, and January and February deliver the biggest, most consistent groundswells. Offshore windows from ENE, E, ESE and SE are common enough during the winter months to make the most of the energy, especially when the Azores High rebuilds after a cold front passes. If you can pick the clean days, this is world-class beachbreak surfing.
