The North Atlantic roars to life during October, and Amado, a west-northwest-facing beach on Portugal's Algarve coast, is right in the crosshairs. Average swell heights jump to 1.8m (6ft) in October and climb to 2.4m (8ft) by December, with dominant periods climbing into the powerful 12-13s band. The prevailing northwest and west-northwest swells wrap nicely into this exposed stretch of sand, producing consistent, well-ordered lines. Ideal offshore winds from the east-southeast and southeast are most common in the late autumn and early winter months, and the 'ideal wind' percentage peaks at 29 percent in December. Combined with the longest, heaviest swells of the year, this is the prime window for pumping surf at Amado.
