Cordoama

Praia da Cordama is a wild, windswept beachbreak nestled beneath towering cliffs on a vast, exposed stretch of Portugal’s Algarve coast. The lineup is a dynamic mix of sand, rocky outcrops, and sand-covered reefs, offering both lefts and rights that peel for long, powerful walls when conditions align. On smaller, clean days, the waves transform into smooth, grinding walls that reward positioning and flow. It’s a remote and demanding spot, best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers who can handle the shifting peaks and occasional heavy closeouts.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic is in full winter mode from October through March, and Cordoama sits right in the firing line. Average swell heights hover in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range with periods building from 11-13s, meaning powerful, organized groundswell is hitting this northwest-facing stretch of the Algarve. Negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) tend to shunt the storm track south toward Iberia, producing wet, windy conditions but also back-to-back west and northwest swells. The catch is that the local wind is often from the NW-NNW quadrant, which is onshore. Still, when low pressure tracks across the Atlantic and pressure gradients swing the wind into the SW or W, Cordoama turns on with clean, hollow lines.
