Best Surf Season (May - August)

Outer Kom is a west-facing slab that sits directly in the firing line of the Southern Ocean storm tracks. In the South African winter, the roaring forties push a relentless series of lows toward the Cape, and average swells climb to 8.5-9.5ft (2.6-2.9m) with periods holding at 12.4-12.6s. The swell window also shifts favourably: WSW and W components become more common alongside the dominant SW, giving the reef more of the lines it needs. The downside is the accompanying west/northwest wind, but May and June post the best clean-window rates of the year at 19 percent. When an east/southeast breeze follows a cold front, Outer Kom turns into a heavy, grinding, world-class wave.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, September - October)

The shoulder seasons are a game of timing. Average wave heights range from 7.5-8.9ft (2.3-2.7m), and periods in April and September reach 12.1-12.2s, so there is real power in the water. Swell direction, however, is still mostly SW/SSW, and the frequency of ideal wind is only 9-16 percent. But when the Cape Doctor is light, or an ESE/SE offshore flow sets in before a front, Outer Kom can deliver extremely fun, well-shaped waves with far less crowd and more manageable size.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer at the Cape is all about the South Atlantic High and the SE wind machine. Average swell heights drop to around 7.5ft (2.3m), periods shorten to 11.1-11.4s, and the swell direction swings back to a south-southwest/SW bias that is less efficient on this west-facing reef. To make matters worse, the wind is ideal only 7-8 percent of the time. The fierce afternoon Cape Doctor often blows 30-50kph, putting a bumpy, wind-blown texture on the surface. The saving grace is dawn patrol, early-morning clean windows, and the occasional summer SW groundswell, but consistency is low.
