The North Atlantic storm track aims squarely at the Bay of Biscay through autumn and winter, and Laredo feels every pulse. Average surf heights climb to 1.5-2.0m (5-7ft) between October and March, with swell periods regularly stretching past 12 seconds. The wave rose is dominated by a broad WNW/NW/NNW band, while true N/NNE/NE windows are less common but high quality. Long-period groundswell from low pressure systems moving south of Iceland or stalling near the Bay of Biscay is the main engine here. For Laredo to look its best, offshore flow from the S-SSW quadrant keeps the NE-facing beach clean; November through January see that ideal wind 48-51% of the time. Water temps range from 12.6C to 18.2C, so a solid winter wetsuit is part of the deal. When the NAO is negative or neutral, blocking Greenland highs often steer storms toward the southern Bay of Biscay, and Laredo goes from average to genuinely firing.
