Today's Surf Conditions at Los Locos
Spot Overview & Description
Los Locos is a reliably punchy west-facing beachbreak, perched just south of the sleepy Cantabrian village of Suances. This sand-bottom stretch unleashes both lefts and rights over a forgiving seafloor, making it a go-to for intermediate and advanced surfers when the northwest Atlantic swells roll in. The break picks up plenty of energy from a wide swell window, though it can get a bit fickle on smaller days. Best with a low to rising tide, the waves peel cleanly with moderate consistency, especially under light offshore winds from the east or southeast. On the downside, a lingering haze of industrial runoff from the Torrelavega factories upstream can taint the water after heavy rains—a minor hazard to keep on your radar. The vibe here is generally mellow, with crowds manageable outside peak summer weekends, but the quick, bowly sections demand sharp reflexes and a good read of shifting peaks.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic does the heavy lifting from October through March. Average wave heights climb to 1.6-2.1m (5-7ft) and the average period sits comfortably between 11.3s and 12.9s, putting Los Locos directly in the path of powerful W, WNW, NW and NNW groundswell. Frequent low-pressure systems tracking toward the Bay of Biscay generate consistent, heavy surf, while south and south-west winds ahead of those systems groom the faces. When the North Atlantic Oscillation shifts negative, the storm track drops further south and this west-northwest-facing beach genuinely fires. These are the months locals circle on the calendar.
