Flagler Avenue seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Flagler Avenue's most consistent swell window runs from October through March. The Atlantic storm track pushes south, and cold fronts and nor'easters routinely pump NE and E swell into the beach's ENE-facing exposure. Average wave heights climb to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), with periods in the 8-8.5s range - punchy, rideable, and occasionally powerful. The best days come in the wake of cold fronts, when the wind swings to the W/SW and turns the ocean to glass. When the NAO trends negative, the East Coast storm track often intensifies, and Flagler's swell window lights up even more.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
April and May are a transition zone: E/ENE swells still appear, but averages ease to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and onshore ESE/SE winds become more frequent. September stands out as a wildcard - hurricane season can deliver serious ENE/E groundswell, but the prevailing NE/ENE breeze often adds lump. It's fair-to-good, especially if you can pick your windows.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest stretch at Flagler Avenue. With an average of just 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) and a dominant ESE/SE windswell, the beach is more about warm water and longboards than raw power. There are plenty of glassy SW wind days thanks to the summer seabreeze regime, but the lack of northerly/easterly groundswell keeps the surf small. It's a great time for beginners, but not for serious waves.
