August: Powerful Southerly Swells and Cold, Clean Air

August keeps the winter momentum rolling, though the ideal-wind score eases to 61% as the season begins its long transition. The average swell height is still a solid 5ft (1.6m), with an average period of 9.0s. The S and SSE directions remain the primary swell sources, combining for just over 30% of the wave energy, while SE contributes another 10% and the NE/ENE quadrant begins to reawaken as early spring systems start to add more E/NE windswell. This can create mixed conditions on the surface, but the wind is still predominantly offshore. W winds are at 22.8%, and the WSW-WNW-NW quadrant totals nearly 52% of all observations, so clean windows are frequent. August is a great month for bigger, more powerful S/SW groundswells - sometimes 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) - wrapping into Werri after the S/SW lows pass. Water temperature reaches the annual minimum at 16.8°C, and air temperatures average just 10.1°C. Rainfall is modest at 2.09mm/day, and the reward for braving the cold is some of the most consistent and well-shaped surf of the winter.
