May: Winter's Groundswell Engine Warms Up

May is one of the most reliable months of the year at Werri. The average swell height sits at 5-6ft (1.7m), and the average period reaches its seasonal maximum at 9.5s, giving the waves a distinctly more powerful, groundswell-driven feel. While the E/SE quadrant is still present - SE alone contributes almost 14% of the energy - the S and SSE directions now dominate the background, with SSE at 18.5% and S at 14.8%. This creates a mix of clean SE swell and punchy S/SSE groundswell that can wrap into the east-facing beach. What really sets May apart is the wind: offshore WSW-W-WNW-NW directions combine for a massive 43% of all readings, and the ideal-wind percentage jumps to 64%. With persistent W and NW airflow and only 2.09mm/day of rain, the surface is often clean and glassy. Water temperature drops to 19.9°C, so a thicker wetsuit becomes necessary, but the quality trade-off is more than worth it. May is consistently good across the whole month.
