Best Surf Season (April - August)

From mid-spring through late summer, the Southern Hemisphere storm track directs a nearly endless conveyor belt of SSW and SW groundswell at the southwest-facing sands of Playa Nosara. Average wave heights climb to 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m), and the average period peaks at 13-14 seconds, meaning real power behind every wave. The trade-wind flow relaxes compared to the dry season, and the percentage of ideal wind days climbs to 64% in July. Water temperatures stay around 29°C, so all you need is a board shorts and a dawn patrol before the afternoon sea breeze shows up.

Fair Surf Season (September - November)

As the summer progresses, the surf actually holds size into September and October - average heights stay around 5ft (1.5m) - but the quality becomes more of a lottery. The Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts south, East Pacific tropical cyclones and monsoon trough disturbances generate heavy SW swell, yet onshore W and SW winds become more frequent, dropping ideal winds to 38% in September. By November, the trades re-establish themselves and the consistency returns, making late fall a bridge between the wet and dry seasons and offering clean, user-friendly waves.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

The dry season at Playa Nosara is by no means flat, but it is the least consistent stretch of the year. Average heights drop to 4ft (1.3m) and periods shorten to 11-12 seconds. The swell window is a mix of fading South Pacific pulses and North Pacific NW/WNW winter swells, with some S and SSW energy mixed in. The saving grace is that the Papagayo offshore winds from the NNE through E quadrant blow a good percentage of the time, keeping surfaces clean and rippable. Time a solid SSW/SW pulse with a clear trade-wind morning and it can still be world-class - just expect smaller, more inconsistent days in between.
