July: Cleanest Green Season Surf

July might be the sweet spot of the entire year at Playa Nosara. The swell remains fully locked into the SSW window at 79.8%, with another 7.6% from SW, and average heights stay at a solid 5ft (1.5m). Periods are an excellent 13.5 seconds, and 27.3% of the energy comes from the 1.5-2m band. But the standout statistic is wind: a massive 64% of the time, the wind is ideal for surfing - the best of any month.

The flow is predominantly light, with no single direction really dominating. Northeast trades are present only 14% of the time, but there is also very little SW or WSW onshore wind, so the ocean stays clean for long windows. This is the month where consistency meets quality: fewer days ruined by afternoon onshores and plenty of long-period SSW/SW groundswell wrapping into the beach.

At 29.1°C water temperature and 5.05mm/day of rainfall, it is wet-season warmth at its finest. July also tends to sit between the spring and fall hurricane peaks, which keeps the tropical cyclones at a distance. If you can only pick one month for a Costa Rica surf trip, July should be at the top of your list.
