January: Trade Wind Groomers and Mixed-Minded Swell

January serves up a classic Costa Rican dry-season mix. The average combination of 4ft (1.3m) at 11.5 seconds is still a long-period swell by tropical standards, but the direction is split between fading North Pacific pulses from the NNW through WNW and early Southern Hemisphere SSW/SW energy. The SSW and SW sectors combine for roughly 30% of the total spectrum, while NW/NNW and W/WNW sources add another 34%, meaning the swell window is wide but not always perfectly aimed at Playa Nosara.

The real star of January is the wind. A strong Caribbean high-pressure system drives the Papagayo trade winds out of the NNE and NE 54% of the time, often blowing 20-30kph. That offshore flow rakes the southwest-facing lineup clean for 43% of the month. When an 11-12 second SSW/SW groundswell lines up with those offshore trades, Playa Nosara offers clean, rippable 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) waves. On days when NW or NE swell dominates, expect more mixed, less organized surf - and when light westerly sea breezes kick up in the afternoon, the surface gets a little lumpy.

At 28°C water temperature and just 0.23mm/day of rainfall, it is full beach-resort weather. The dry and sunny conditions make January a great month for logging waves on a bigger board and learning the lineup, but you will be chasing the smaller windows when the swell direction truly aligns.
