September: Tropical Storm Energy Brings Rare Power to the SW Swell

September is the most interesting month of the summer low season, thanks to the peak of the eastern Pacific tropical cyclone season. Average swell height is 1.1m (3.5ft) and average period is 13.0s - still long. The wave rose is again dominated by SW (59.9%), SSW (24.2%) and WSW (14.4%), with W at only 0.7%. That means the overall direction remains poor for San Pancho, but the distribution extends into larger classes: 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) readings appear from SSW (2.3%), SW (2.8%) and WSW (1.1%), and even 2-2.5m (6.5-8ft) from SSW/SW/WSW. When a tropical cyclone or its remnants line up southwest of the spot, the bay can suddenly see pulsing, long-period swell with real size - though the angle is still not ideal. Winds are favourable 40% of the time, with light offshore flows common. The trade-off is the weather: heavy rain (11.10 mm/day), air temps of 28.2°C and water at 30.3°C make it humid, stormy and unpredictable. Keep an eye on the tropics; September can surprise.
