Virac Harbour

Tucked away on the eastern flank of the island, Virac Harbour offers a distinctly unhurried, off-the-beaten-path surf experience. It's not a hub of activity, but that's precisely its charm—a haven for those seeking solitude and consistent waves without the crowds. The local lineup is sparse, making it easy to snag a wave, and the island setting promises further discovery for the adventurous soul. The wave here is a classic left-hand point break, peeling over live coral beds. It thrives on an east swell, but also picks up north swell energy. Best suited for intermediate surfers, the magic happens when the swell reaches a clean 2 feet (0.6 meters) or more. For optimal shape, wait for a northwest wind and a rising tide—high tide brings the wave to life, offering the most favorable conditions. On bigger days, the wave opens up for fun turns and lively sections. Beyond the harbour, the island invites exploration. Consider chartering a local boat to venture to nearby breaks, including the promising lefts and rights around Twin Rocks, just an hour south. Virac Harbour may be the starting point, but the island's full surfing story is waiting to be written.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Virac Harbour is a true direction-dependent break, and the yearly progression at this southeast-facing spot is dictated by the battle between the northeast monsoon and the southwest monsoon. The most promising window runs from October through March, when the northeast monsoon supplies the largest average swells of the year--peaking at 1.1m (3.5ft) in January and December with periods near 8.3s. More importantly, this is the season when N/NW offshore wind windows appear most often, especially in October when ideal wind reaches 41%. The dominant ENE/NE swell direction is still not the S/SW/SSW/WSW that Virac needs, so patience is required, but when a cold frontal surge from the Asian continent pushes the trades into the NNW/NW quadrant, the harbour can actually string together clean, ridable waves.
