Best Surf Season (October - March)

Playa Bruja's southwest-facing exposure is a magnet for long-period Pacific groundswell, and the October-to-March window is when the whole setup comes together. As the North Pacific storm track wakes up, frequent extratropical lows send WNW, W, WSW and SW swell rolling toward the Mexican coastline, while the strengthening continental pressure gradient across North America funnels clean, groomed wind through the beach. Average swell heights sit between 0.8m (2.6ft) and 1.1m (3.6ft) with periods anywhere from 12s to 14s, and the percentage of ideal surfing wind windows reaches 40-55%, especially in November, December and January. This is the most consistent, most surfable season at Playa Bruja.

Fair Surf Season (July - September)

The heart of summer and early autumn brings a different kind of energy. The Southern Hemisphere groundswell machine is fully online, with SSW swell dominating 80-90% of the time, and the average swell height climbs to 1.1-1.2m (3.6-3.9ft) with 13.6-13.9s periods. Tropical cyclones in the eastern Pacific can also send larger, powerful swells into the region. The trade-off is the weather: heavy rain, warm water near 30°C, and a more intermittent wind field. Yet the ideal surfing wind percentage rises to 32-43% during these months, making July through September a solid secondary season for those willing to chase the windows between showers and tropical disturbances.

Low Surf Season (April - June)

The spring months are the weakest link in Playa Bruja's annual cycle, but not for lack of swell. In fact, April, May and June deliver some of the longest-period Southern Hemisphere groundswell of the year, with SSW energy peaking near 88% in June and periods around 14.3-14.4s. The problem is wind. The ideal surf wind percentage collapses to just 16-20% as thermal sea breezes and a more persistent onshore SSW/SW/WSW flow take over. The raw wave quality is frequently compromised by bumpy, lumpy, wind-blown surface conditions, making dawn patrol essential. This is the low season for overall surf quality, even though the ocean is full of energy.
