June: Peak SSW Groundswell, but Summer Onshores Take Hold

June delivers one of the highest average wave periods of the year at 14.3s, alongside a staggering 88.3% of all swell energy from the SSW. Over half of these waves fall in the 1-1.5m (3.3-4.9ft) class, and the average height sits at 1.1m (3.6ft), with occasional 1.5-2m (4.9-6.6ft) pulses. This is prime, long-period Southern Hemisphere groundswell, and Playa Bruja's southwest exposure is dead-on to capture it. In terms of raw wave energy, June is one of the best months of the year.

Yet the wind remains the limiting factor. A mere 16% of the time is considered ideal, as the pressure gradient between the subtropical high and the continental heat low drives a persistent WSW/SW/SE flow. WSW 15.4%, W 16.8%, SE 10.1%, SSE 10.0% and SW 9.9% make up a sizeable share of the wind rose, and the onshore components quickly degrade wave quality. Rain becomes a factor for the first time in months at 1.49 mm/day, and water temperatures warm to 28.7°C. Catch it during a dawn window before the sea breeze kicks in and you will find some of the best, longest-period surf of the year; wait for mid-afternoon and it will likely be blown out.
