April: Southern Hemi Groundswell Fires, But Winds Turn Fickle

April is the classic Southern Hemisphere groundswell month on this stretch of the Mexican Pacific. Energy from the SSW dominates at 62% of all observations, with SW adding another 27.5%; the wave window remains almost perfectly exposed, with 99.9% of swells arriving from favorable directions. The balance of heights shifts noticeably: 1-1.5m (3.3-4.9ft) and 0.5-1m (1.5-3.3ft) now share nearly equal influence, and the average swell height reaches 1.0m (3.3ft) with a very powerful average period of 14.3s. Occasional 1.5-2m (4.9-6.6ft) sets from SSW and SW are on the radar.

The main challenge is wind. The ideal surf wind percentage drops to 20% as the offshore flow weakens and is replaced by a more variable regime with WSW 9.8%, SW 5.2% and SE/SSE components. Afternoon sea breezes and the first real pulses of tropical moisture can turn clean groundswell into chop. With water temperatures at 23.5°C, air at 24.5°C and almost no rain at 0.04 mm/day, the surf is often tempting, but dawn patrol is the key to finding the groomed, quality waves that April is capable of.
