December: Winter Swell and Offshore Flow - A Classic Setup

December closes the year with a classic winter surf pattern. Swell energy is broadly distributed across the ideal quarter: SW 29.8%, WSW 22.8%, SSW 21.6%, W 18.1% and WNW 7.3%, meaning essentially all incoming waves come from the exposed southwest through west-northwest window. The swell remains mostly in the 0.5-1m (1.5-3.3ft) range at 77.7%, with 19% in the 1-1.5m (3.3-4.9ft) class and an average height of 0.8m (2.6ft). Periods of 12.3s are solidly in the powerful band, giving those smaller waves a surprising amount of punch.

Wind conditions are excellent for the most part. The cross-offshore quadrant is everywhere: NNW 28.2%, NW 27.4%, WNW 14.2%, with ideal surfing conditions 52% of the time. Rain is scarce at 0.35 mm/day, air temperatures average 21.1°C, and water temperature is 24.0°C. December offers the cleanest, most consistent small-to-fun winter surf of the year, and with the Northern Hemisphere storm track peaking, the potential for bigger swells is never far away. It is a fine way to bookend the season in Playa Bruja.
