January: Mid-Winter Groundswell and Clean Offshore Windows

The eastern Pacific winter pattern locks in during January, with frequent North Pacific low-pressure systems sending long-period W and WSW groundswell into Playa Bruja. Swell direction data shows a full spread across the ideal window: SSW 19.5%, SW 26.1%, WSW 23.1% and W 20.7%; combined, nearly 90% of the wave energy arrives from the exposed southwest through west quadrant. Heights remain modest, with the 0.5-1m (1.5-3.3ft) class accounting for the bulk of observations, topped by occasional 1-1.5m (3.3-4.9ft) sets from the W and WNW. Average swell height sits at 0.8m (2.6ft) with a 12s period that puts it squarely in the powerful long-period bracket.

Winds are at their most favorable of the winter, with the wind rose dominated by NNW 25.3%, NW 29.4%, WNW 16.2% and W 6.4%, mostly light to moderate at 0-20kph. The ideal surf wind statistic reaches 46%, and with dry, mild air averaging 20.7°C and water temperatures of 22.7°C, January offers some of the most consistent, rideable surf of the year at Playa Bruja. It is a month for long-period, lined-up waves on a southwest-facing beach, albeit on the smaller side, so bring a groveling board for the average day.
