January: Midwinter Muscle and Northeast Lines

January delivers the biggest, most powerful surf of the year at Wishing Well. The average swell height sits at 5ft (1.5m) with a 10.0-second average period, right at the threshold of long-period groundswell. Swell direction is heavily weighted toward the NE/ENE quadrant: NE alone accounts for 33 percent of observations and ENE another 25 percent, with NNE contributing 21 percent. That means nearly 80 percent of the energy arrives from between NNE and E, requiring significant wrap and refraction to reach the west side of the island. Preferred W/WNW/NW swells are nearly absent, so quality depends on how much of this north swell sneaks around the headland. Size is substantial: 43 percent of waves are 1-1.5m (3-5ft), 33 percent are 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft), and 10 percent reach 2-2.5m (6.5-8ft). Winds are dominated by ENE/E trades; ENE shows 41 percent of observations with another 23 percent from E. Only about 41 percent of the time is the wind in the ideal window, but onshore W/NW wind is rare, under 3 percent combined. With air temps around 25°C (20-30°C), water temperature 26.5°C, and moderate 2.1mm/day precipitation, it is warm but can be unsettled. Expect the best windows with lighter ENE wind, hollow lefts on the west-facing sections, and occasional 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) pulses when a strong cold front drives a 12-second-plus NE swell.
