June: Swell Lull and Glossy Mornings

June is one of the smallest months of the year at Wishing Well. The average height slips to 3-3.5ft (1.0m) and the period compresses to 7.3 seconds, which the data tells us is a short-period, windswell-dominated spectrum. ENE is the dominant swell direction by a wide margin at 45 percent, with E adding 35 percent; the classic NE direction is only 7 percent, and pure W/NW swell is absent. Almost all waves are between 0.5-1.5m (2-5ft), with 61 percent under 1m and only scattered 1.5m-plus waves. For a west-facing spot, this translates to small, soft, largely refracted trade swell. Wind conditions are actually excellent for surf: ideal wind 68 percent of the time, east winds dominate, and velocities are light-to-moderate. Water temperature climbs to 28.5°C, air temperature averages 27.5°C (24-32°C), and rainfall is 3.1mm/day. June requires a patient eye on the buoys; an uptick in period or a passing tropical wave is the only thing that will turn this month on.
